Peter, you might take a look at the applicaiton of scan statistics to answer these types of questions. The book, "Scan Statistics" by Glaz, Naus and Wallenstein (2001)is quite comprehensive, but perhaps not the easiest read.

Hi Group,
Imagine a population of n individuals. Each individual has got x and y
coordinates. Now these individuals tend to occur in aggregations, clumps,
clusters or patches etc.
In some cases the densities of these aggerations are so high, that the
aggregation is (visually) interpreted as individual unit. (But not
mathematically or statistically)
Nevertheless, sometimes it is not unambigously clear whether an indiviual of
the population is linked (belongs to) to such an aggretaion or not.
Additionally, there is no clear semantical definition of this particular
kind of aggregation (e.g. plant patch).
Now the questions I have to the group are:
1. Are there similar problems known in g-stats or somewhere else?(How can
they be solved?)
2. Are there methods to determine whether or not a individuum belongs to an
aggregation or not? (implemented in standard software??)
3. Is there a way to define (semantically, statistically etc.) an
aggregation unit such as a patch?
4. Any kind of literature hints are welcome.
