AI-GEOSTATS: spatial-temporal analysis of water quality data

I am a complete novice at geostatistics. I have a 10+ year data set of water quality parameters for a water body-- a typical monitoring data set -- multiple parameters collected at fixed stations on a monthly basis. I wanted to explore the data for any temporal or spatial relationships. Are there any papers/books you can suggest that explain spatial-temporal procedures used on water quality data? Or can you suggest procedures that I should consider? I typically use R and ESRI ArcGIS for data analyses, but am open to suggestions for other software to use.
