NATIONAL ENVIRONMENT PROTECTION COUNCIL

- COMMUNIQUE -

16 September 2011

Air quality, packaging on environment ministers’ agenda

Environment Ministers today agreed to work together to take a fresh
look at Australia’s air quality.

Chaired by Australian Government Environment Minister Tony Burke, the
council comprises environment ministers from all states and territories.

The council agreed to release the review of the National Environment
Protection (Ambient Air Quality) Measure, and noted that the review’s
recommendations will beprioritised and responded to through the
development of the National Plan for Clean Air. The new National Plan
for Clean Air will provide a robust framework for identifying cost
effective emission reduction actions, and implementation arrangements.

Packaging waste was also on the council’s agenda. Ministers approved
the making of the National Environment Protection (Used Packaging
Materials) Measure 2011, which supports the Australian Packaging
Covenant in its actions to reduce the environmental impacts of
packaging.
