While browsing through old newspapers on the "papers past" website, I
came across this snippet from the Christchurch Star of Thursday,
December 31st,
1896:

Messer's Hausman and Gow will exhibit Edison's wonderful invention, the
Kinematograph, at the Oddfellows Hall on Saturday. Mr C. A. Seager is
setting up a complete electrical plant to work the Kinematograph, and is
also erecting an arc lamp outside of the building. The pictures will be
lifesize. In connection with the kinematograph there will be an
exhibition of the Roentgen X rays.

Just goes to show that what we take for granted once was considered to
be a novelty.

For those who are wondering a kinematograph was an early form of moving
pictures.

John
