I spoke too soon. After a period of no network activity the interface
seems to go to sleep and external pings to the machine stop working. If I
check on the machine itself everything seems to be still working  - I can
get a list of access points and run iwconfig and ping the machines IP
address - but it is still dead to the outside. It is only when I ping the
gateway, or an external address, that the interface wakes up and is again
accessible from outside. There is nothing in the log to indicate any
problems.
