OK, found most of the problem. The ComponentArt sample did not set the content type in their example, so I did not do so in my callback code. I've added a Response.ContentType = "application/xml" so that the returned tree nodes are marked with the appropriate header. My question, though, is why AjaxPro would interfere with this at all.
