FYI, Anthem.NET does feature a ProgressBar that actually shows server progress:
Anthem.NET is an AJAX open source library that is very easy to use and offers tight integration in the ASP.NET lifecycle (as opposed to Ajax.NET Pro):

implementation and the OS/Http Server it is possible to read
