I have found that 99% of the time when this happens to me its related
to my database code not working. The problem is you will not get an
error page if you for example have the wrong conenciton string in your
web.config... normally you get a big error message page, but instead
because there is no post back from the server there is nothing to say
"hey this method broke" and as such it will return an empty object.

Try copying the function to a "postback style" page so if it is
erroring out youll see the error message and know for sure that your
dataview object is not empty.
