It's just one of those things, operations people love to have a single artefact 
with command line flag parsing etc. 

java -jar application.jar -c <config> -l <logging> -p <port> -n <name>

When something can be downloaded, and directly executed, it is so nice to work 
with, no crappy bash scripts to get in the way. 

Compare and contrast with Tomcat and it's startup scripts, how many hours of my 
life have been wasted that way, I do not know.
