Got it. I see now that this is what is being done in the example of the documentation page for sharding (http://doc.akka.io/docs/akka/2.3.3/contrib/cluster-sharding.html#cluster-sharding) where the entryId() method simply returns an id value while the shardId() method returns the mod of the id thus guaranteeing that an entryId will always have the same shardId since they're both based on the id of the message.
