I see the problem now - I was thinking too single-threaded-ly. Even if I use Await(actorRefFuture) after your code, this will succeed before the onComplete (callback/thread) has a chance to do anything. I've put in a Thread.sleep(3) before doing the Await, & now I get consistent success.
