I've never used it in production but waaaay back I built a proof-of-concept based on one of the Play Framework sample apps using Redis pub/sub to feed a WebSocket based chat room.
https://github.com/ryantanner/websocketchat-redis It does extremely little, really just round-trips messages across Redis pub/sub rather than having messages be sent directly out to other subscribers.
