I would recommend that you use sbt-native-packager <https://github.com/sbt/sbt-native-packager> with JavaServerAppPackaging. It is much more powerful than the discontinued AkkaKernelPlugin. I just updated the documentation of how to use the sbt-native-packager and you can see a preview of that documentation here: https://github.com/akka/akka/pull/17065
Those instructions should be the same for an Akka 2.2.x project.
