It's using plain Stashing <http://doc.akka.io/docs/akka/2.3.11/scala/actors.html#Stash>. Isn't the stash buffer wiped away when the actor is restarted due to the StashOverflowException and it can continue?
Anyway, making the stashing (buffering) in ClusterClient more configurable is on the list of improvements for 2.4 <https://github.com/akka/akka/issues/15110>.
