No, you should not depend on how long the bytestring will be, you'll need a proper framing implemented on top. This is actually much easier if you'd use Streaming IO (using Akka Streams), and frame delimiting stages: http://doc.akka.io/docs/akka-stream-and-http-experimental/1.0-RC4/scala/stream-cookbook.html#Parsing_lines_from_a_stream_of_ByteStrings
