OK, I added xerces to the Xbootclasspath, and seemed to make it further. Be forewarned - unless you are *EXTREMELY*CAREFUL* you may not be running with what you think you are with JDK 1.4. The JDK contains a built in version of Xalan and Crimson, and will default to these versions in most cases. I have a safety timeout in place to guard against runaway or deadlocked builds. In this case, it kicked in and cancelled the build of excalibur after twenty minutes on a reasonably fast machine.
