Maybe it just happens if you use the latest version of Xalan? I've changed Ant's <style> task to turn fatal processor errors into build failures and latka started failing after that. To be more clear, <style> failed before that, it just didn't turn into a build failure: <http://jakarta.apache.org/builds/gump/2002-04-09/commons-latka.html> Inside the doc-xslt target there are quite a few error messages. The first set of style tasks results in empty output files leading to the second set of error messages.
