I live in a rural area of Arkansas. It is unknown how many crimes are
prevented here due to the fact that most of us have guns in our homes.

It prevented a couple here. Just the threat of one, not the firing of one.

Subject: source of gun statistic on Monday

>
> I just listened to the recording I made of Monday's show. It was not
> Dan in Missouri who said that 1.5 to 2.5 million crimes stopped by
> guns. It was a man who called himself Jonathan in Michigan, though at
> the end of the call he said he was in the Air Force in Colorado. As to
> the source of the statistic, I couldn't find it on Bill Clinton's or
> the NRA's web sites. I did find an article at
> http://www.jpands.org/hacienda/edcor6.html.
>
> It refers to a study by Prof. Gary Kleck and Doctors for Integrity in
> Policy Research (DIPR).
>
> "Kleck found that the defensive uses of firearms by citizens amount to
> 2.5 million uses per year and dwarf the offensive gun uses by
> criminals. Between 25-75 lives are saved by a gun for every life lost
> to a gun. Medical costs saved by guns in the hands of law-abiding
> citizens are 15 times greater than costs incurred by criminal uses of
> firearms. Guns also prevent injuries to good people and protect
> billions of dollars of property every year."
>
> Another view of DIPR and its founder Dr. Edgar Suter can be viewed at
> http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/shows/guns/procon/injuries.html.
>
> "Dr. Suter denies his organization is linked to direct NRA funding,
> although members have worked closely with NRA researchers. He claims
> that most medical journals have refused to publish articles supporting
> his position because of editors' biases against guns. 'It's truly an
> outrage how flawed and dishonest the medical literature is on the
> subject,' says Dr. Suter. "
