I once rented a V6 156 (this was in 2000) from Hertz in Milan. I pre- rented it here in the USA, and received an e-mail confirmation that it would be a 156 and a V6, and I was to present this paperwork to the Hertz desk at the Milan Malpensa airport. When I arrived in Milan, I went to the Hertz desk and showed them the paperwork. The woman started to work her computer and said that my car was downstairs at the rental car pickup. So I went down there and up wheeled a Hertz attendant in a medium sized Opel. I showed him the paperwork and INSISTED that I get what I paid almost $400 for on a two week rental. The Hertz guy looked at my paperwork for a few minutes and then excused himself and went into the office adjacent to the lot. He and another guy conferred for a few minutes, then I saw my man's associate pick-up a telephone. When the guy who was helping me came back out, he handed me back the paper and told me to wait, and that someone was bringing a V6 156 from their downtown office. About 40 minutes later, up comes a brand new silver 156 with a with a 3.0 liter V6 in it. So the only advice I can really give is to stick by your guns and try to rent your car through some stateside agency and get specifics in writing about what you are renting. After that initial renting, I started getting loaned cars by Alfa whenever I went to Italy, so I have no recent rental experience.

which rental company is it?
Usually they do not rent by brand, but by category. So you can see ad talking about some cool cars, but do not take is for granted you are gonna get THAT car.
