On the earlier cars, the seal is not as easily replaced.

On these, the seal is an o ring held in place by a flat washer of sorts which is staked in place. It is possible to replace these with a conventional oil seal (I've done it), but requires removing and dismantling the steering box to machine the housing to accept the seal.
