Mark, I've got the same model year GTV and I don't remember an aluminum fitting on the return fuel line just before the tank. If I remember correctly, there are two metal tubes as the fuel lines go over the axle; used by both the forward and return lines.
And I replace the engine compartment fuel filter just like you do, from above. Drop the heavy canister down into my hand and then wiggle it up to me through all the hoses. To remove the entire assembly would mean to undo all those hoses and the two bolts that hold it to the body. I tried that once, and it was even more a PITA than the method I use now. Did you replace the green vacuum line that goes from the engine back to the gas tank?
