I've replaced A/T units in 164 cars and had no trouble, but I've either filled the torque converters or had them already full from being in service. Just recently my daughter was driving and one of the coolant lines leaked all the fluid out, to the point where the pump was empty. I fear for internal damage, but the converter may just be dry. Last year an alfabb poster had a drained and refilled A/T unit fail to engage, and he asked a similar question. He never posted his resolution. Does anyone here have any words of wisdom? I await....

By the way, this A/T unit was out of service for many years and came to me from the P.O. with another car with slipping A/T. I installed it and it chirped on 4th gear engagement, almost as if its tires were chirping on the pavement. I asked ZF (Eriksson) and was told, "Oh, yes. You need such-and-so ATF additive." Well, it took me a while, but I figured out it had been transferred between companies and it was Lubegard Automatic Transmission Fluid Supplement (in 10 oz. bottles) available at NAPA as well as some other places. NAPA was the only in-stock location I could find in he S.E. VA area. It actually worked. I was educated that ATF brands and supplements can actually matter. Hoodathunkit?
