Biba:

The caliper's are all rebuilt
and it now has three quarters of loose/soft brake pedal after spending
umpteen hours trying to bleed the ungrateful wretch.

The most likely cause is that you still have air in a line somewhere. If you've really been thorough about bleeding it, in the right order and using fresh fluid for each reservoir fill-up (Don't recycle the fluid that comes out of the caliper. Ask me how I know.), then I'd suggest trying the old Lucas Mechanic Black Magic Air Removal Trick:

- Disconnect the battery and cut a piece of wood to length so that, with the pedal depressed as far as it will go, you can insert the wood between the pedal and the driver's seat, holding the pedal down.
- Walk away.
- Do something else for a day.
- Come back tomorrow, remove the wood and see what happens.

This actually worked very well for me on my GTV6 when I made the mistake of recycling the brake fluid between the caliper and the reservoir. Yes, that's how I know.

I removed it and there was some schmootz (sp?) under the seal/ring.

Geez, doesn't anybody use their spell checker anymore?
