Ron:

Taking a cross country car trip soon - CA to FL - and was wondering
what I might be able to carry on the plane with me on the way to CA. I know sharp pointy things like screwdrivers would be out, but what about wrenches,
sockets, wirestrippers, sidecut pliers, etc? Anybody done this recently?

A few years ago I flew with a set of tire chains in my checked bag. It wasn't a problem. The best part was to have someone lift the bag and say, "What do you have in here, bricks?" "Nope. Tire chains."
