Ding, ding, we have the correct answer below.
Most likely the contacts in the solenoid are shot. You can try
cleaning them, which might work for awhile, but since you have to
remove the statrter to do so, I'd just replace the solenoid.

On the older starters you can actually disaasemble the solenoid. If you can
do this on yours, remove and reverse the contact bar. This will present
fresh contact surfaces, and faster cranking by virtue of better conductivity
through the contacts. I was able to do this on a 1971 1750, and the cranking
speed was significantly improved, as well as better starting.
