It appears that the only thing holding that head on was a LOT of corrosion between the studs and the head. It was packed solid full length. Getting the head loose from the block was tough but the real problem was getting it up the length of the studs. I believe what compounded the problem was whoever changed the head gasket last time used Permatex everywhere, head gasket, valve cover gasket and under all the stud nuts and washers. That, I believe sealed around the studs so well that the PB Blaster couldn't find its way down the studs to the corrosion. If I ever hit another one like this and if I can flip the engine over I will run the PB Blaster down the studs from below. But now I have my two super duper Skip/Alfa tools so that shouldn't be necessary again.
