Mine does this as well. It really bugs me. I had gotten a used one from
Larry and it ran fine without this noise. It was a confirmed 1986. I got
a confirmed 1986 flywheel and ring gear. A few weeks after the install,
the starter let go. Someone working on my car sent if off to get rebuilt,
but it came back as an exchange, not the actual starter, so I don't know
what I got back. The noise on starting began with the new starter.
The mechanic said they should stop doing this eventually, but it has
been going on the whole time for about 7 years now. I have had no
problems with the starter but this noise. But it really bugs me

The really funny thing is that my Twin Spark makes the same noise
and the engine came to me with starter attached, so I should be
able to assume that they were always together. The twin spark came
with the gear reduction starter too. The only difference is I put the
starter on my Alfetta bell housing as it did not come with the Milano
bell housing. The only thing I can guess is something to do with the
spacing off the mounting surface? Could there be a difference there?
