Joe you need to verify cam timing by using this template _http://www.alfabb.com/bb/forums/attachments/164-168-1991-1995/66906d1179330802-cam-timing-cam- timing.pdf_ (http://www.alfabb.com/bb/forums/attachments/164-168-1991-1995/66906d1179330802-cam-timing-cam-timing.pdf) and do a compression check. It sounds like your timing belt has jumped time and you may have bent a valve. Set your crank pulley at Top Dead Center "P" mark by turning engine clockwise as viewed from front of car. Check us out over here _www.alfaBB.com_ (http://www.alfaBB.com) under Alfa 164. The timing template link and other info for V6 engines in my 164 maintenance sticky.
