I've fooled around with  the side vents on my '73 GTV and found the felt had
become unglued as well.  I used RTV adhesive to hold the felt in place and I
didn't care if the felt had expanded a bit.  The vent-ball will flatten felt
back down in no time;  it will take a bit more effort to pop the ball back
in place.  And the 'thicker' felt will help keep the ball in place when you
rotate it.

I found that the main problem to be the vent closing flaps.  I've had
extract the ball to close the vents by hand because turning the little
chrome knob couldn't do the job.  Lubing the gears does help a bit.
