this is offtopic, but i'm list admin, so i get to give myself permission
to go offtopic
for the past year, i've been actively involved in openstreetmap.org, a
project
to build an "open source" map of the world, covered by an open license
so that
many uses are permitted by default. this is by comparison with other
commercial
mapping services on the net which sometimes have some pretty significant
restrictions under the hood.
this is an ideal project for car guys to get involved in it, as it makes
for an
excellent excuse to drive around. as good as the maps look for large parts
of the country (NY looks good, for example, while WV is fairly awful),
much of it needs review and improvement. the learning curve is steep, but
i'm most of the way up it, and glad to help anyone who thinks this looks
interesting.
by the way, i'm also a board member & secretary for the nascent
US chapter. we're in the process of incorporating now, and will be
holding our first US conference in mid August in Atlanta.
contact me off list, no need for this to become a persistent thread
on the digest.
cheers,
richard
