Hey Bruce, The Moto Guzzi list sounds like they have a good nomination for this year's Darwin Awards! ;-) Short circuiting a battery to ground is not a good idea (well... maybe they are talking a motorcycle battery vs a car battery. Still, it's like playing with a bunker blaster vs an atomic bomb).
RBSHARER have the right idea in terms of replacing the battery with a more controlled current source that has a circuit breaker. But Beatle's idea is better using a heat source. I've found a simple portable propane torch for soldering works well and doesn't accidentally "melt" or weld anything in the process. The difference in thermal expansion between the parts is enough to break whatever is bonding the threads (either corrosion or thread lock).
