Norman William Gallatin, 74, of Garrison died Wednesday, July 21, 2010 at the
Belle Plaine Nursing and Rehab Center following a short illness.B  An informal
Memorial Service and Remembrance will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, July 24, 2010
at the old Vinton Train Depot, where those in attendance should enter from 4th
Avenue between 5th street and the railroad tracks.B  In accordance with
Normanbs wishes, his ashes will be buried at his parents' gravesite in
Pierce City, MO.
B 
Norman was born September 2, 1935, in Columbus, Nebraska.B  He attended Tech
High and North High in Des Moines, and Park College in Parkville, Mo.B  HeB 
served in the U.S. Air Force.B  He worked as a draftsman, machinist, and
mechanic, and was still actively consulting on mechanical restoration of
English and Italian cars.B  Norman was an inventor, and held several patents.

Norman was a sculptor, whose geometric works based on Platonic solids in
metal, glass, and mirrors were in regional and national exhibits during the
1980s and 1990s. He was surprised and proud to find that one day, while
reading the latest issue of Scientific American magazine, he turned the page
and saw a color reproduction of one of his works.B  He had sent Martin
Gardner,B  methematics columnist for the magazine, a photo of one of his
works, to supplement his letter responding to a recent column by Martin
Gardner.

Norman was interested in science, particularly astronomy and cosmology.B  He
did a lot of self-directed reading in this field, but what neighbors remember
of this interest is being awakened in the middle of the night to see a meteor
shower, eclipse of the moon, or northern lights.

He is survived by sons, Geoffrey Gallatin of Iowa City and William Pericles
"Perry" Gallatin of Houston, TX; special friend, Karen Nichols of Garrison;
sister, Gaile Gallatin of Cedar Rapids; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and
extended family.B  He was preceded in death by a son, Byron Gallatin,B  and
byB  his parents, Norman and Mildred Gallatin.
