SO i finally got the Spider out of the deep warehouse storage with almost no access where it had languished for 27 years into a good work/storage building with unlimited access and loads of space, so the project has begun. I had visited the warehouse once a year and added sone oil to the cylinders and turned the engine over a few times, until i missed 2 years in a row and then found the engine locked solid. Before opening the engine--which i assembled in 1977 and has about 4000 miles on it since rebuild--i tried soaking cylinders with an amazing variety of fluid substances derived from hydrocarbons with no results. Now, with engine on the bench and cylinder liners/pistons soaking immersed in diesel oil for over a week now, still no movement, Two or three moderate taps with a woodblock and hammer, still stuck. I guess i'll need someone with a torch to heat things up before using a hydraulic press to get things moving again. Seems like i may not be able to get the 9.7 Borgo ring set i need, so starting to consider changing to 1750 pistons. good idea or not ?? My project on building up this car started in 1972 when i got it drivable, then gradually progressed untill 1977 when i said enough. Never driven more than 1200 miles per summer season. Did some of autocross in mid-70s, track events at AROC meetings: 2 "fastest in class" trophies from Gratten and somewhere else. Bought my first used Alfain 1966 as a college graduation present to me after trading in my first car, a '57 MGA. I've owned 8-9 Alfas between '66 and '83 including 2000 GTV, Giulia TI, GT Jr. CIAO, and Buona Sera, me fratelli. -- to be removed from alfa, see http://www.digest.net/bin/digest-subs.cgi or email "unsubscribe alfa" to [email protected]
