I have been bugged by exhaust fumes In my '78 Spider for years with top up and windows partially down. Top up and windows up no fumes. Windows down, even just an inch seems to create a vacuum that draws fumes in. Over the years I have checked all the usual places: trunk seal, evap canister and associated hoses, exhaust leaks, tailpipe straight, tailpipe turned down, nothing seemed to make a difference.
Last weekend I noticed black streaks on the red carpet in the seams in the vertical drape area under the rear window where the carpet is cut to allow it to conform to the shape of the rear body under the rear window and at the bottom of the drape where it rests on the horizontal surfaces and was not tightly glued down. Could this be exhaust soot? Out came the carpet and I closed off all of the body openings in the sheet metal along the sides near the seat belt retractor areas and around the openings behind the door jambs where the tall trim pieces mount (the ones with the trunk release latch built in). That was it - no more fumes & no more smelly clothes after a drive!
