This is called a proximity sensor. It's pretty common these days in
many cars, not just the 156. My wife's non-Alfa has this and it
pisses me off. I hate big key fobs on these modern cars, so when
I went to get a flat copy of what looked like a common looking
key shank, I was told the same thing. I'm temped to just take my
copy of the fob and open up the dash and duct tape it to the
inside and get the flat key for my key chain. I think that is the
only way around it.
