I don't know what the laws are in you part of the US or what you agreed to
with the shop but I had an Alfa cylinder head at a very well known shop and
they couldn't seem to get around to doing the work. The engine had been
damaged by a valve failure that had been traced to a defective part installled
by the shop. Since I had done business with the shop for a long time we
mutually agreed that I would fix the bottom end and they would re-do another
cylinder head at no cost. Sadly, this went back and forth for four years
before I simply got tired of it and told the shop to return my cylinder head.
I intended to take it elsewhere for repairs... The shop owner kept telling me
he would get around to sending it back and that he was working on it... You
know the BS! I even showed up unannounced at the shop one day and demanded my
parts, I live on the East coast and the shop was in California, and still got
nothing.
Finally, thourghly disgusted, I called the District Attorney and asked what I
could do. He instructed me to send the shop owner a registered letter, return
receipt requested, stating the owner had a specific time to box and ship my
head and/or provide me with a FedEx/UPS tracking number or face criminal
charges. Obviously, though the shop owner had been a friend I was committed to
follow through with the D.A. Given the value of the head the shop owner was
facing grand theft charges. So I received my tracking number in the mail some
four days later. The head arrived at my house three days after that. Imagine
my surprise when, after four years of arguing and the threat of criminal
charges, I opened the boxed and there sat a perfectly overhauled head ready to
bolt onto the car. It worked perfectly and it is still on the car. Sadly the
shop owner and I no longer speak to each other and the shop has long gone out
of business (go figure) but business is business. Good luck getting your car
back

sounds like a really bad bussines man.as is i wouldnt be put off by the fact
hat he may refuse to do your work.if you feel that way he could push the work
ff forever.he may have your car but he's not upholding a minimum of
ervice.sounds like a prima donna.i would look into alternative mechanical
ervice.sometimes places that deal with volvos or saabs are not afraid to
ackle alfas also.find a place that agrees to do it and then you could
hreaten to remove your car and after its removed if it comes to that hit him
ith a small claims suit for the towing and a bit more.don't tell him about
he lawsuit till the car is in your posession.what was the problem with the
ar anyway.till i retired i had a garage for years in ny and i found more then
5% of the other garages we dealt with to be honest.this putting off thing is
razy stuff.its negligent.of course i can't judge being i don't know what you
greed with him before the towing of your car to him.

hanks, good idea, before actually asking any of my lawyer friends i could
ention that i'm thinking about it.
ne of the problems is that telling him how annoyed i am getting about the
ituation will probably make it
ven less likely that he'l have any interest in finnishing the project, though
ast week i said that i wanted
real estimate of the time - tired of the next week crap, & how much it's
osting. haven't heard back.
