The factory manual (1222-R3-4/71) Alfa for the rear axle and differential
is pretty clear the
torque on the pinion nut, with the flange held from turning with a flange
tool, is 8 - 14 Kgm ( 58 - 100 lb-ft). The preload of the bearing is set
by shim, if you are not changing the bearing, but keeping the bearing,
shims and housing the same ( just changing a seal) you shouldn't have to
mess with the preload. If you do want to measure it, the rotating torque
on the pinion in the bearings, no differential to drive, is 11.5 - 15.5
Kgcm ( 10 - 13.5 lb-in). You change shims between the bearings to adjust
the preload.
