My GTV-6 flasher is a modern garden-variety Bosch unit available over the counter at places like NAPA and Pep Boys. It only flashes faster when a bulb is either out or not making proper contact.

My experience is that flashers will also click rapidly if one or more of the turn-signal bulbs is burned-out (or in the case of Alfas, not making decent connection due to corrosion or just poor sockets). I was unaware that short circuits will also cause it...

It depends on which type of unit is in the car. In Jon's car, being a '74, I assumed that he'd have a bimetallic unit. Those cycle faster under heavier current load. "Hybrid" units use a relay and timing circuit, and can sense when a bulb is out. Those are designed to blink at twice normal rate when that happens. I don't know when Alfa would have switched to hybrid or solid-state flashers. I kind of figured that wouldn't have happened until at least the Milano.
