Hi Stefano,
If per the discussion it's a diode (or possibly brushes) it's an arguement 
for having the later style alternator in which the diodes are part of the 
brush pack. Depending on how old the alternator is, you can just swap that out 
but a commutator inspection is highly recommended. I had my last overhaul 
done at Riteway in San Francisco, if they rebuild your core, there's no tax, 
if they sell you one exchange, there is tax. The plan is to have my spare 
core rebuilt, so it's done and on my shelf when I need it. I'm pretty sure 
it's the Milano high output unit, no idea if it fits a 164 or not. If you're 
upgrading to HO, don't forget to put in a bigger ground wire and check all the 
ground connections and any ancient spade connectors in the area. Keep a 
spare fan belt in the trunk, I had to go up one size from the "correct" part 
number for my Berlina.
