I can't answer the question about the manuals, but my 74 GTV did this a few years ago. Lifting up the boot covering revealed that a thin piece of metal that holds it to the body had broken. I had my body shop re-weld it and all was fine. I don't have any pictures of it but it was at the rear of the assembly.
