as a reminder, there are a bunch of hackers out there
breaking into various and sundry web mail accounts;
when they succeed, they generally send one line spam
messages to the address books for those accounts.

when i see such messages from subscribers, i generally
remove them. if your account is hacked in this manner,
you should simply resubscribe after recovering the account.

in the meantime, please

1) use good passwords (somewhat random mix of upper and
    lower case letters, numbers, and special characters if permitted
    by the vendor. note that gmail does accept a number of special
    characters.)

2) don't use the same password for multiple accounts. this is
    Very, Very, Very Bad Practice, as the hackers frequently, once
    an account is compromised, visit lots of other sites to see if
    the same credentials work there as well. it would be particularly
    bad news if a gmail account and an online bank account site
    had the same credentials, for example.
