Alan:
My signal flasher stalk in the '84 GTV-6 sometimes works
ne to the right, and won't 'click in' to the left, and
other times does just the reverse. I'm referring to the
stalk's position, not to the lights---any ideas before I
start taking it all apart????
Isn't that a joy? On top of toe-and-heeling my car as I downshifted for
turns, I learned to also hold the turn signal stalk in the left or right
position with my left pinky finger to keep the signal on, while at the same
time holding the wheel with my left hand, while shifting with my right. Now
THAT takes a bit of coordination! But it's no longer necessary.
I just did this very job on my car. I tried all kinds of things that I
could spray into the switch to make it work, but nothing helped.
Eventually, I gave in and took it apart. To do so, you'll have to remove
the steering wheel. Then you'll see that the top cover of the switch can be
removed by undoing four screws. Using a sharp instrument, take off the
centering spring, visible through the slot in the cover. Then take the
cover off and the stalk will come right out. Take note of the position and
mounting of the white canceling device, because it will probably fall of as
you manipulate the stalk. You'll see a very strange cam on the end of the
stalk. That's what needs to be adjusted. Two followers on the underside of
the cover, loaded by the centering spring, ride on the cam. Notice how the
two sides of the cam converge toward the tip at the end opposite the stalk.
Using a file or a Dremel tool, increase that convergence. The plastic is
tough, and mine took a good deal of deft milling with my Dremel tool to
remove material. Just make the cam converge a bit more at that end and then
put the switch back together to test it. If it doesn't hold, take off a bit
more. At the back end of the cam, you'll see a small hump on each side and
a recess where each follower "parks" when the switch is thrown. I deepened
the recesses on mine also. But for me, it appeared that increasing the
convergence at the tip was what made the biggest difference.
