It is probably your water pump. I had a similar experience not long ago.
About a year ago I changed my alternator and every few weeks after that I had
to readjust a squealing belt. Then I started getting a rattling noise from
the water pump area while at a track event. Luckily, it got me home but when
I pulled the belt off, I could wobble the water pump pulley quite a bit from
side to side. I was also getting the spray deposit on my hood and also
thought it was just a small oil leak somewhere. Wrong answer!! Luckily, the
pump never leaked but the bearings were toast.
Can you drive it? Sure if you are lucky but now that you know it's bad, I
would change it at the first opportunity.
