I used the Eastwood stuff without much surface prep. It lasts about 2 years then rust spots start appearing and I recoat them. I have to remove the headers every two years in preparation for the smog check.
I have some Por-15 Marine Clean and Prep & Ready that I probably should have used first. The picture in this post is from a year ago: <http://www.lesliewong.us/blog/2010/05/21/alfa-romeo-exhaust-headers/> I just looked at the headers and there are pin-head sized rust spots appearing right near the head, probably due to inadequate surface prep.
