I think that I've confused the issue by calling the loud banging noise come
from underneath the car 'backfiring'. There isn't any flames/smoke shooting
out the intake manifold as in a real backfire. This one is caused by air
getting into the front resonator and causing a loud banging noise. Is there
a term for this ?

Yes, I've got a SPICA and the micro switch did work in the past. But the
hole in the muffler, it is hard to tell if it is still operating.

Anyway, I removed the exhaust in an attempt to weld up the hole only to find
that the resonator is too far eaten with rust to be repaired with a MIG
welder - I just blew more holes in the carcass. And I found out that the
exhaust bracket that is attached to the tranny was loose - the nuts that
held it on to the tranny studs were all gone. This might account for the
cracks in the resonator - no support.

Looks like I'll be replacing parts of the exhaust system with either OE
type equipment or go with an entirely new system as in the Magnaflow SS
