this is also true for SCCA racing in certain classes like IT, a place where
various Alfas might be run; we require 2 matching VINs be on the car
for this class.
as a tech inspector i don't care much which two are on the car, but
you need to be able to show me two.

it's kind of expected that manufacture dates for a model year start
a couple of months early; that is, it's not at all surprising to see
an October yy build date for a model year yy+1 car.
