Joe: I have Tacx brand bicycle rack that is made to clamp to either side of the trunk lid, much like a roof-top carrier clamps to rain gutters. It probably dates to the '70s, the company (Dutch I believe) is still in business but does not seem to manufacture racks. The bikes (capacity 2) clamp at the fork with a standard quick-release lever. A toe strap secures the bottom bracket to a support near the lip of the trunk (boot?). The rear wheels hang over the back of the car. Front wheel holders are pretty chrome. I have used the rack on a 1980 Subaru, a 1987 240 Volvo and on my 1984 Spider. Of the three, it did dimple the Spider lid, likely because it is just so big. Let me know if you are interested in more details. I vaguely recall a post and picture many years ago of a custom bike rack for a Spider that used the mounting points for the hard top as a base for a bar across the rear that allowed fork style clamping of road bikes. -- to be removed from alfa, see http://www.digest.net/bin/digest-subs.cgi or email "unsubscribe alfa" to [email protected]
