G'day Pete, and Stevan,
Firstly, re Pete's reply to my query, I'm not familiar with USA or pre-1750
GTVs, so can you confirm for us that your '67-spec GTV with the excellent
pedal has a dual-circuit (tandem) underfloor MC? Or is it single circuit?
(Plus you have, as you say, your big calipers, no boosters and 22m diameter
in the MC - same diam as my dual MC). I'm just looking to see what are the
differences between your system with the great pedal and mine with the pedal
that's only average.
Re your Outlaw calipers, I'm guessing these would have a much greater total
piston area than my original standard GTV calipers - would I be correct
there, please? If so, your great pedal feel is even more remarkable, given
that your standard diam MC is now having to move a greater volume of fluid
than my MC is.
Interesting that your underfloor GTV has a better pedal than the
more-conventional layout in your Berlina and Spider!
Secondly, re Stevan's replies (to Pete), I wonder if Stevan missed my first
email, which Pete was replying to? Stevan, I don't think Pete was suggesting
that his booster-less GTV pedal was too hard - rather, I think he was
advising me that it is possible to have a really firm pedal and great
braking on an underfloor-MC car with standard-diam MC, which is what I was
asking about.
Thanks all,
Graham in NZ, 1750 Euro GTV

Subject: [alfa] Underfloor GTV Brake MC sizes (Outlaw calipers on a '69)
Hi Graham,
Not to confuse matters, but my 1969 GTV has a very stiff brake pedal. At
rest, the pedal is on the cabin side of vertical. When I stand on the
brakes the pedal gets to the vertical position. There is no fade, no
spongy pedal, just really stiff brakes. I have some Outlaw calipers on the
car (four piston in the front and larger two piston in the back) and a
22mm '67 MC. When I got the car back in 1985 I tore out the original brake
system and basically converted the car back to a '67 MC without a booster.
The brakes are absolutely sweet.
I am running the same brake set up on my '72 Berlina and '88 Spider, but
neither has the stiff pedal of the GTV. Of course, these cars have the
firewall MC and a brake booster too.
Cheers, Pete <

Hi Pete,
Seems like a self answering question, add a booster if that's what works
on the other cars and is lacking on this one. When the power steering
didn't work on my ex-wife's Volvo, it was similar. Very heavy effort
needed to turn the steering wheel, but it turned. Fixing the PS pump put
it back to normal. HTH

Hi Peter,
[Snip] ....Your cheap alternative might be to try some more standard
pads....
[Snip] ....Jim changed out my brake pads...and all of a sudden I had
brakes!
[Snip] ....The pads from said supplier were a HUGE disappointment and I'm
glad they took them back.
[Snip] ....Hope it helps!
