Hi, I did not read that guys posting on exhaust fumes, but some things I noticed when dealing with these cars pertaining to the exhaust system that may help.
Make sure you use new brass gaskets where the manifold attaches to the head and make sure they are put on the right way. They are easy to put on backwards. And make sure when tightening them down they don't get smashed. Once the manifold is on, leave it on. Check that all underbody pipe to pipe fittings are sound with new gaskets, as well as sound piping. Make sure the manifold fits flush to the head and is not warped. I noticed that in the engine compartment many times along the fire wall, dealers had drilled access holes for future A/C installation. Many times the A/C was never installed and these access holes remained open, allowing fumes and the elements to escape in. Make sure these holes are plugged. Under the the interior carpeting in the footwell and behind the front seats, there were access holes plugged at the factory with rubber plugs. Over the years from wear and tear, rust, etc, these plugs fell put, were removed, or not there for whatever reason. Make sure they are plugged as well. On the 2000 engine there is a gas recirculation tube that ran from near the thermostat housing, through the engine compartment, through the underframe of the body, ending at the evaporative canister near the gas tank in the trunk of the car. Many times this polyethylene tube became compromised inside the tubular passageway under the car from heat and age. Make sure the integrity of this tube is intact or replaced. Also, there is a steal tube where the polyethylene tube attaches, near the thermostat housing. This tube would become completely occluded from rust and moisture. Make sure gases flowing through this tube are unobstructed. Good luck.
