are the PIA wire snap rings being used simply to save a penny or so,
or are they supposed to be superior to the considerably more civilized
retaining rings?

When I worked as a Honda motorcycle mechanic, all of the Honda engines used full-floating wrist pins, and they were retained using a wire snap ring. As I remember, the wire was bent inward at each end, providing a pair of ears that could be squeezed with a normal pair of needle-nosed pliers. Removal and installation were easy. In the six years I worked there, we only saw one that was broken. Otherwise, we never had a problem with them. Again, these were wires, as opposed to the common, inside snap ring that's installed with a pair of snap ring pliers.

Correct me if I'm wrong (like I need to say that around here), but aren't all Alfa wrist pins an interference fit into the small end of the connecting rod, floating only in the piston?
